AFA was founded in 1990, when industry icon Ross Porter, led a management buy-out of the Australian operations of American Family Life Assurance company of Columbus, in Georgia USA.

Known in Australia as Australian Family, the business changed its name and adopted the acronym “AFA” keeping the family tradition intact.

The early ‘90s marked the launch of AFA’s niche general insurance ‘Personal Accident and Sickness product’ and laid the foundation for a decade of strong growth. AFA would quickly become known and revered as the secondary income protection market for Life Insurance Advisers and General Insurance brokers in Australia providing a much-needed solution for people unable to purchase income protection.

AFA carved a niche driving innovation through technology and personal service leading the market as the No.1 selling Accident & Sickness product in Australia.

Today, AFA is now run by second generation Porters and continues to evolve as a company, fostering young talent and developing experienced underwriters. They have a rich knowledge of accident and health insurance, a fantastic team of underwriters and a passion to protect people.
